[27/02/11] Will it snow for christmas? 14

ok3

Fans and Subs!

Subtitles today are increasingly visible, important and necessary.
They are ever more sophisticated, varied and multicoloured.
They are created and received in an incredibly diverse variety of settings.
They are paid for and produced for free, appreciated and sometimes criticised.
This competition aims to shine the spotlight on subtitling,
as carried out by subtitle lovers.
It is promoted by Sub-ti Ltd, an international company specializing in film festival subtitling, in collaboration with the University of Macerata (Italy) as well as subtitle experts and researchers
in France. The aim of the competition is to give visibility to all those fans who relentlessly produce subtitles for themselves and their virtual communities and who often share them with the whole
world but whose work is rarely acknowledged or paid for.
If you’re an Italian or French fansubber,
this competition is for you!
What and where: you will be asked to subtitle a 5 to 10 minute clip from English into your mother tongue and send your subtitle file to us within 90 minutes. We will release the clip to be
subtitled at 12.00 p.m. on 30 April 2011 and you will need to send the subtitles back by 1.30 p.m. of the same day. No specific guidelines will be given and the subtitles will be evaluated by a
jury made up of translators, trainers, scholars and film critics. The subtitle file is to be sent back to us in .srt format.
How: to take part in the competition, please send an email to fansandsubs@subti.com as soon as possible. The email should contain your name, surname and a short (200 word) description of yourself.
You should also send us proof that you are a fansubber: e.g. a link to a webpage that lists the active members of a fansubbing community and includes your name or a letter from a senior member of a
fansubbing group that states what subtitling work you have done and are currently doing.
We will only be able to accept a maximum of 20 participants for each language combination (English-French; English-Italian). Our final choice will be made on a “first come, first served” basis; the
first 20 applications from proven fansubbers for each language pair will be accepted.
The prize: A jury for each language pair will select the best subtitles. The two winners (for French, and Italian) will each receive a 400€ cheque and the opportunity to translate a feature film
for Sub-ti Ltd.

www.subti.com fansandsubs@subti.com
